From classroom to turbines: local students explore wind power up close

Lal Lal Wind Farm welcomed a group of around 30 Year 8 students from Damascus College for an on-site tour to learn about wind energy and the local environment. The visit was organised in partnership with the on-site Vestas team and the joint-owners of the wind farm Atmos Renewables and Northleaf Capital. The students were ‘blown away’ by the knowledge they gained, particularly around turbine operation and maintenance, and the diverse career pathways in renewables.

During the tour, the students explored a range of STEM topics, from how wind is measured and how turbine blades capture energy, to the environmental benefits of wind power and the positive impact of renewable projects on local communities. They also learned about the varied jobs that support a wind farm, spanning engineering, trades, community engagement and environmental management.

It’s fair to say the students are “big fans” of Lal Lal Wind Farm with many commenting on how inspiring it was to see renewable energy technology up close and to learn about real‑world applications of their classroom lessons. Several students mentioned that they live near Lal Lal Wind Farm and were excited to share their experience with family and friends, helping to build understanding and pride in the project.

The tour forms part of a broader collaboration with Damascus College, which is launching a Year 8 Alternative Program at the St Brendan’s School site in Dunnstown.

Lal Lal Wind Farm is proud to support educational initiatives like this and to play a role in inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and environmental advocates. Our thanks to the onsite Vestas crew and Damascus College staff and students for their enthusiasm and collaboration.
